Gipiemme has a long history in the Italian bicycle industry. The original company was founded in Milan in 1964 and was one of the very first manufacturers of cycle groupsets responsible for a number of early innovations and manufacturing techniques.
The factory started working with Campagnolo and in 1974 it relocated to Vicenza Vancimulio Italy.
As a component manufacturer in the 80s the company first started to produce a range of professional saddles and then progressed to create high quality wheels for track and time trial use.
As a true specialist manufacturer Gipiemme have revolutionized cycle wheel design in a number of ways..
- In the early 80s we were among the very earliest manufacturers to develop glass fiber wheels
- In 1982 we pioneered the use of the “lenticolare” aerodynamic shape – an innovation that’s still in extensive use today (by us and also by many of our competitors)
- In 1984 we created the first wheels made entirely from Carbon Fiber.
- In 1989 we started the production of composite wheels with spokes made from aluminium and carbon. The application of aeronautical technology to bicycle wheels had begun!
- In 1999 we continued the innovation with our first range of CNC lightened wheels and also the first wheels with grouped spokes - pairs, triples and quadruples.
Now for the 2009 the company has once again expanded its offer with a new UK specific range of wheels and accessories. All rims, wheels and saddles made by Gipiemme are produced on site at our factory in Loria, Northern Italy.
GIPIEMME (pronounced GPM) is derived from “Gran Premion della Montagna” – which is the name of the prize given to the winner of the mountains classification in Italian road races (including the Giro D’Italia).
One of the highlights of Cycle 2008 at Earls Court was the relaunch of the Gipiemme brand to the UK market. Many remarked that it was great to see the products available in the UK again – and here are some of the unique selling points of this fantastic brand:
